Prison plötzlich davon Kenntnis nahm. Die Interaktion zwischen einer explosiven Gefängnisbelegschaft, die nach Unterhaltung hungerte, und einem wahnsinnig fitten Johnny Cash war elektrifizierend. Sein düsterer Machismo hatte endlich ein Zuhause gefunden. Cash sang jeden Gefängnis-Song, den er kannte ("I Got Stripes", "The Wall", "25 Minutes to Go", "Cocaine Blues" und seinen "Folsom Prison Blues"), und faszinierte die Menge. Bei diesem Set geht es um Atmosphäre. Es ist nicht Live at the Grand Ole Opry. Diese Version ist mit ihrer eigentlichen Fortsetzung gekoppelt , die drei Jahre später in San Quentin aufgenommen wurde und es beinahe mit Folsom aufnehmen kann. --Colin Escott

Kompletter Erfahrungsbericht
Mittlerweile haben ja diverse Künstler in Gefängnissen gespielt (z.B. Metallica) und den Insassen so ein wenig Lebensfreude und Abwechslung gebracht. Aber ich glaube, keiner hat sich so frei, ungezwungen und frech gegeben wie Johnny Cash. Das Album beinhaltet insgesamt 18 Tracks bei einer Gesamtspiellänge von 59 Minuten. Sowohl langsame, als auch schnellere Songs sind zu finden, eine ausgewogene Mischung. Die Songs sind gut mitzusingen, aber keine Partylieder. Er bezieht sich einmal mehr auf seine religiöse Neigung und gibt dem Zuhörer einen intensiven Überblick, wie es in amerikanischen Gefängnissen zugehen kann. Dabei lässt er keinen Zweifel daran, was er von den Institutionen hält und scheut sich auch nicht davor, z. B. das eben beschimpfte Personal nach einem Glas Wasser zu fragen. Auf seine sehr direkte Art spricht er den Insassen und allen anderen Menschen sehr viel aus dem Herzen. Alles in allem ein Album für jeden, der gerne auch zwischen den Zeilen liest/hört.
