willkommen bei meiner 3. Musikrezension hier bei Ciao.

Ich habe die Rezension textlich erweitert, ein Tracklisting hinzugefügt und 8 zusätzliche Bilder hochgeladen. Ich war positiv überrascht, zu jedem einzelnen Titel die Songtexte im Internet gefunden zu haben. Die Songtexte habe ich im Bericht belassen, auch wenn diese vom Textumfang größer als die eigentliche Rezension sind.

Über die Band

Mit diesem Bericht kehre ich zurück zu den "Heavenly Voices", jenem Sammelbegriff, der mit der legendären Compilationreihe des deutschen Hyperium Labels eingeführt wurde. Bel Canto ist eine norwegische Band und 1985 als Trio gegründet worden von der Sängerin und Frontfrau Anneli Drecker, dem Multi-Instrumentalisten Nils Johansen und Geir Jenssen. Damals waren Sie noch Teenager. Jenssen verließ die Band 1990 u.a. für sein Ambient-Projekt Biosphere. Die Band ist seitdem als Duo nach wie vor aktiv. Ein neues Album ist in Arbeit. Anneli Drecker hat 2000 und 2005 Solo Alben veröffentlicht und an anderen Projekten teilgenommen.

Die Musik hat sich im Laufe der Bandgeschichte gewandelt von Ethereal zu melodiösem Synth-Pop mit Weltmusik Einflüssen. Gemeinsam geblieben ist der Gesang von Anneli Drecker, eine wunderbar harmonische Musik und positive Grundaussage. Der Hörer wird entführt in eine träumerische, fast schon himmlische Welt aus dem Norden Europas. Größtenteils unbekannt erhält diese zeitlose Musik durchweg positive Rückmeldungen, wenn ich sie als Hobby-DJ spiele.

Auf Last.fm kann man leider nur eine handvoll Lieder hören. Da ist Youtube deutlich ergiebiger, wo alle im folgenden aufgeführte Songs zu finden sind.

Bel Canto: Retrospect (2001)

Mit dem 2001 veröffentlichten Album Retrospect veröffentlichte die Band ihr erstes offizielles Best-Of Album. Durch insgesamt 18 und davon 10 geänderte Versionen ist es gleichermaßen zum Einstieg wie für Fans interessant. Es enthält einen repräsentativen Querschnitt der bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt 14-jährigen Bandgeschichte. Die Compilation besteht aus einer randvollen CD mit einer Laufzeit von über 74 min. Darüber hinaus gibt es noch eine Limited Edition, die aus 2 CDs besteht. Im folgenden beschränke ich mich jedoch auf die "normale" Version.

1. Bombay (3:52)

Der Einstieg für ein Best-Of Album will gut gewählt sein. Hier wurde bewusst ein etwas exotischer Song gewählt. Er wurde 1996 auf dem 4. Album "Magic Box" veröffentlicht. Wie dem Namen zu entnehmen ist, baut er auf einem indischen Elektro-Synth-Sound auf. Östliche Streichinstrumente, Gitarren, Blasinstrumente und Schlagzeugklänge. 78 BPM. Der Gesang von Anneli Drecker ist gewohnt melodiös und teilweise mit indischen Koloraturen ausgereichert:

2. Shimmering, warm & bright (3:13)

Es folgt der wunderschön leicht dahinfließender Titelsong von dem 1992 veröffentlichten 3. Album "Shimmering, warm & bright". Helle Akustikgitarren und Elektrogitarren. Dazu ein leichtes Schlagzeug. Das ist bereits der Klang für diesen lieblich-leichten Song. Der ist mit 106 BPM für die Tanzfläche geeignet und sollte auf jeder Feier für eine fröhliche Auflockerung sorgen können. Ohne Zweifel einer der besten Songs von Bel Canto.

Der Gesang von Anneli Drecker dazu lautet:

3. Didn't you know it? (4:11)

Dieser Song stammt vom 4. Album. Er beginnt ruhig mit einer jazzigen Solotrompente und sphärischen Orgelklängen. Dazu singt Anneli Drecker ruhig. Es setzt der mit 120 BPM flotte und tanzbare Beat mit Gitarrenklängen, Bass- und Elektrogitarren ein.

Anneli Drecker singt beschwingt, teilweise mit einem weiteren Gesangstrack im Hintergrund:

4. Images (3:34)

Ein mit ruhigen Orgelklängen beginnender Song vom 1998 erschienenden 5. Album "Rush": Er ist relativ atyptisch durch die exotischen Orgenelemente und den witzigen 120er Beat. Der Sound ist durch helle, fröhliche Klangelemente ausgeschmückt.

Anneli Drecker singt dazu beschwingt:

5. Summer (4:36)

Ein ruhig, nachdenklich dahinfließender Song mit 64 bpm vom 4. Album. Basierend auf Elektropiano, Gitarre, leichtem Schlagzeug, Orgel und Trompete. Teilweise gibt es wunderschön-liebliche Gesangsverzierungen von Anneli Drecker.

Sie singt klar und melodiös:

6. Paradise (4:56)

Ein weiteres Meisterwerk aus der langen Bandgeschichte: Melodiöse Gitarrenklänge mit Echoeffekt, Elektroorgel, leicher Beat mit 110 bpm. Das ist der fließende Sound des Titels vom 4. Album "Magic Box". Der Song wurde für "Retrospect" in einer neuen Version abgemischt und um 12 sec leicht gekürzt.

Annelie Drecker singt mit lieblicher Stimme und ausschmückendem Gesang:

7. Idly i de-ice (4:51)

Ein nachdenklicher und ruhiger Song. Elektrogitarrenklänge sind zu hören mit leichtem, spannenden 96er Beat. Der Gesang von Anneli Drecker ist sehr schön lieblich, teilweise mit mehreren Träcks als Chor im Hintergrund vom 5. Album "Rush". Der Klang intensiviert sich im Verlauf des Songs mit kräftigen Synth-Orchester-Elementen.

Trommeln, Akustikgitarren, Bassgitarren, Streicher. Diese spielen relativ ursprünglich abgemischt gemeinsamen in einem flottenen 132er Beat. Der Titel stammt vom 3. Album "Shimmering, warm & bright". Annelie Drecker singt fröhlich und beschwingt mit hellen Verzierungen:

9. A shoulder to the wheel (3:56)

Es folgt ein weiteres Highlight dieses Best-Of-Albums. Er stammt aus dem Jahre 1990 vom 2. Album "Birds of Passage". Er wurde neu abgemischt und leicht verkürzt: Elektrogitarren und Trompeten zusammen mit einem ausgeprägten, variierten 88er Beat.

Anneli Drecker singt abwechslungsreich und lieblich:

You're conquered and your blood is pounding
in your ears
but you're doing fine
find the broken pieces and then start anew
you make yourself believe that you did
something right
you're denying your only wish
by forgetting your promises
once and for all

10. Capio (2:09)

Ein ungewöhnlicher, ruhig-träumerischer Song vom ersten Album "White-out Condition". Anneli Drecker singt engelsgleich zu hellen, himmlischen Synth-Orgelklängen. Es gibt gar keinen Beat. Man hört außerdem einen Bass, Flötenklänge, alles elektronisch.

Ein zauberhafter, ruhig und himmlich-leicht klingender Song von dem Album "Shimmering, Warm and Bright". Man hört Gitarren und Synth-Orgelklänge mit leichtem 122er Beat. Anneli Drecker singt mit elfenhafter Stimme, dass man förmlich dahin schmelzen könnte.

12. White-out conditions (3:41)

Der Titelsong des ersten Albums gehört mit zu dem Besten, was Bel Canto bisher an Songs kreiert hat. Er beginnt überaus dramatisch. Man hört sehr schöne Akustikgitarren zusammen mit kleinen Becken. Es hört sich bedrohlich und spannend an. Wäre es eine Filmmusik, so würde man jeden Moment damit rechnen, dass etwas Besonderes passiert. Wenn überhaupt kann man von einem sehr getragenen, langsamen 58er Beat sprechen. Tiefe Pauken und Bass sind dazu zu hören. Anneli Drecker singt schnell und melodiös.

Der Text ist im Gegensatz zur Musik überhaupt nicht dramatisch:

Und mit Signalklängen geht es weiter mit diesem Song vom 2. Album "Bilds Of Passage". Übersetzt lautet der Titel "Frische Felder". Man hört einen getragenen, gleichmäßigen 122er Beat mit einer Elektro-Posaune, Synth-Orgel, Klavier. Dazu der feenhafte, wunderschöne Gesang von Anneli Drecker.

Der Text ist ein Gedicht:

14. Waking will (5:11)

Ein ruhiger, sparsam instrumentierter Song vom 3. Album mit 52er Beat. Es beginnt mit träumerischen Elektro-Orgelklängen. Dazu kommen Gitarren, ein leichter Bass. Ein Hauptanteil an diesem Song hat somit der dynamische und melodiöse Gesang von Anneli Drecker.

Der Text lautet:

15. Blank sheets (3:51)

Mit Gitarren und Orgelklängen geht es weiter zu einem neuerlichen Highlight dieses Albums. Die Musik treibt weiter zum 1. Album "White-out Conditions" mit 69er Beat. Es geht in diesem Song tiefsinnig um die "selbst konstruierte Wahrheit", um die "Seiten des Lebens", dass man sich diese frei hält, um seine Freiheit zu wahren. Anneli Drecker singt ihren Text vergleichsweise gleichförmig. Der Song ist ausgeschmückt mit abwechslungsreichen Beat und einzelnen Highlights. Anneli Drecker singt:

16. Rumour (5:01)

Ein wunderbarer Gute-Laune-Song für die Tanzfläche. Er beginnt fast a capella mit dem Gesang von Anneli Drecker. Nur leicht begleitet von einer Elektro-Orgel singt Sie beschwingt und melodiös den vergleichsweise umfangreichen Text zu diesem Titel. Der Song stammt vom 4. Album "Magic Box" mit leichtem, beschwingtem und gut tanzbaren 97er Beat, der erst später einsetzt. Gitarren und Bass kommen hinzu und bilden das Grundgerüst, teilweise mit Akzenten in Form von Violine, Trompete, etc.

Auf Youtube gibt einen sehenswerten Videoclip, der liebevoll zu einem Zeichentrickfilm verfremdet wurde. Leider wurde der Ton aus Copyright Gründen entfernt bzw. gegen einen anderen ausgetauscht. Außerdem gibt es eine Liveversion dieses Songs zu sehen / hören.

17. The suffering (3:35)

Wir springen zum 2. Album "Birds of Passage". Als Einleitung hört man getragene, orchestrale Klänge mit einem Elektropiano zu einem ruhigen 102er Beat. Wie der Titel schon erahnen lässt, wird er leicht melancholisch vorgetragen von Annelie Drecker, die allerdings erst nach ca. 1 min beginnt zu singen.

Der Text wird klagend vorgetragen:

Ein leicht dahinfließender Song, mit Orgel- und Getarrenklängen. Dazu ein beschwingter 112er Beat. So könnte es immer weiter gehen, wenn es nicht leider schon der letzte Titel dieses Almbums wäre. Dieser Song erschien erstmals 2001 auf "Retrospekt" als Vorgriff auf das 6. und bisher letzte Album "Dorothy's Victory" (2002). Anneli Drecker singt fröhlich und abwechslungsreich dazu:

Fazit

Ein im besten Sinne des Wortes Best-Of-Album: Selten findet man so viel erstklassige und abwechslungsreiche Popmusik auf einer CD versammelt. Von indisch-exotisch über jazzig zu tanzbaren Gute-Laune-Titeln bis hin zu ruhigen Balladen. Dazu stets der wunderbare Gesang von Anneli Drecker.

Die Auswahl der 18 Songs kann als gelungen bezeichnet werden. Ein paar Songs haben es leider jedoch nicht auf das Album geschafft, die ich zu meinen persönlichen Favoriten zähle: Allen voran die deutsch gesungene Ballade "Die Geschichte einer Mutter", aber auch "Continuum", "Hearts Unite" oder das französisch gesungene "Le Temps Degage".

Als Bewertung vergebe ich wohlverdiente 5 Sterne. Besser geht es meiner Meinung nach nicht - nur anders, um auf die unterschiedlichen Musikgeschmäcker anzuspielen.
